How Picks7 measures its cricket predictions — and why we publish the record

Every cricket prediction site will tell you it is accurate. Almost none will show you the ledger. This post explains how Picks7 scores its own models, what the numbers mean, and where you can verify every claim on the site — because "measured, not claimed" only means something if you can check it.

The moment a prediction becomes accountable

Every match in a format our models support gets its pre-match predictions locked in the moment the playing XI is confirmed — before the first ball. From that point the prediction is frozen: nothing gets retracted, nothing gets rewritten after the result. Only decided matches are scored (ties and no-results are excluded), and an exact 50/50 is not a call, so it never counts as a win or a loss.

That single rule — freeze before the first ball, score everything after — is what separates a record from a highlight reel.

What we actually score

Two numbers, both standard in forecasting:

Winner accuracy — did the model's favourite win? Simple, intuitive, and incomplete on its own: calling a 51% favourite is not the same as calling an 85% favourite.

Brier score — the professional metric. It measures how far the stated probability was from what happened, squared and averaged. A coin flip scores 0.25; lower is better. A model that says 70% on winners that win about 70% of the time is calibrated, and the Brier score rewards exactly that. It punishes overconfidence far more than caution — which is why we would rather show you an honest 55% than a theatrical 90%.

Several models, one crown

Picks7 runs several prediction engines side by side — a form-and-matchup model, match simulators, and live machine-learning models that recalculate ball by ball. They disagree sometimes, and we show that disagreement instead of hiding it: when engines genuinely name different winners, the dashboard says so, because measured uncertainty is information.

The crown 👑 you see on a match marks the model that has measured best for that format and phase — not the one with the best story. When the measurements change, the crown moves.

Where to check us

The accuracy page carries the held-out record across formats, men's and women's cricket, scored with the same rules described here. Every finished match page shows what each model said before the first ball next to what actually happened. No account is needed for any of it.

We are not a betting site, we are not affiliated with any bookmaker, and our projections are probabilistic estimates — never guarantees. What we can promise is simpler: the number you see is the number we scored ourselves against, in public.
